Egyptian Trade and Industry Minister Ahmed Samir said on Tuesday that Egypt is keen on boosting relations with Kazakhstan, calling it a “pivotal” country in Central Asia.

Kazakhstan could serve as a gate for Egyptian exports to Asian markets, Samir said in a meeting with Kazakh Ambassador in Cairo Khairat Lama Sharif.

It is among the world’s top 10 producers of wheat, the minister said, noting that Cairo could count on that to secure its strategic commodities.

The meeting was held today just before Samir left for Kazakhstan to attend the sixth Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

Today’s talks focused on means to upgrade joint economic relations in the fields of trade, industry and investment.

In Kazakhstan, Samir is scheduled to also hold one-on-one meetings with a number of Kazakh officials to discuss the future of economic co-operation and ways to enhance inter-trade relations.
