Egypt-Italy dialogue crucial for N. Africa, Med. security

Dialogue between Italy and Egypt is fundamental for the security of North Africa and the Mediterranean, Egypt’s Ambassador to Italy Bassam Rady said.

In an interview with Agenzia Nova three months after his arrival in Rome, the Egyptian diplomat states that the complex situation at the international and regional level requires “greater coordination and exchange of information between Italy and Egypt” on dossiers such as migration crimes, food security, energy, the fight against terrorism and the crisis in Libya.

Rady speaks about “renewed momentum in bilateral relations”, citing various high-level officials visits between the government representatives of the two countries that have taken place recently, starting with the participation of the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, at the COP27 climate summit in Sharm el-Sheikh last November. “For President Sisi, it was very important to invite Prime Minister Meloni at the COP27 summit in Sharm el-Sheikh on the same day of his inauguration in Rome”, reveals Rady.

“Italy is a very important country for Egypt and a gateway to Europe. Egypt has a central role in the Middle East and in the Mediterranean countries”, says Rady.

“In light of everything that is happening on a regional and international level, relations between Egypt and Italy are very important.

Irregular migrations, energy, liquefied gas, food security, trade, Libya, Tunisia and anti-terrorism are all dossiers relating to regional security” on which we can talk, the Egyptian diplomat added. He underlined the “central role” of Egypt in the region of North Africa and the Middle East.

“Egypt is one of the few stable and safe countries in a boiling region, if we look at the situations in Libya, Sudan, Tunisia, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Palestine and the occupied territories, Lebanon”, Rady adds.
