Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli attended on Thursday the installation of the reactor pressure vessel for the second unit of Egypt’s Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, marking another major step in the Egypt’s peaceful nuclear energy programme.
The event was attended by ministers, MPs, IAEA’s Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, senior Egyptian officials, and representatives from Russia’s Rosatom, including Director General Alexey Likhachev.
The installation comes just months after the first unit’s vessel was put in place, reflecting the accelerated pace of construction. Officials emphasised that the project is progressing according to schedule and in line with the highest international standards of safety and quality.
Grossi praised Egypt’s progress and reaffirmed the IAEA’s support for member states in developing peaceful nuclear programs. Likhachev noted that the next stage will involve welding the reactor’s main cooling pipeline, underscoring continued momentum in the project.
Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Asmat highlighted the vessel’s critical role in housing the reactor core and ensuring nuclear safety, stressing Egypt’s commitment to energy diversification and sustainable development.
The Dabaa plant will comprise four VVER‑1200 reactors with a total capacity of 4,800 MW, making it one of Egypt’s largest strategic energy projects and a cornerstone of its future energy security.
