Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Raafat Hindy, met with Jean-François Baril, Co-founder and CEO of HMD Global, on the sidelines of the Finnish President’s visit to Cairo. The discussion focused on strategies to scale up mobile phone manufacturing within Egypt and increase exports to regional markets.
During the meeting, HMD Global reviewed progress since launching local production in 2023, specifically highlighting the success of its ongoing partnership with SICO at the company’s manufacturing facility in the New Assiut City Technology Park.
They also outlined plans to begin exports to North Africa and expand access to African and European markets, while boosting local value through the development of feeder industries and attracting suppliers.
HMD Global currently produces around 12 models in Egypt and aims to reach a production capacity of about 2 million mobile phones, both feature phones and smartphones, by 2026.
Hindy stressed Egypt’s goal of becoming a regional hub for the mobile phone industry, highlighting the importance of localising electronics manufacturing and increasing exports.
Baril noted that Egypt’s strategic location and skilled workforce support the company’s expansion plans, positioning the country as a key export base for Africa and beyond.
