Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptians Abroad Badr Abdel-Aati held a telephone conversation on Sunday with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Giorgos Gerapetritis, as part of ongoing coordination between the two sides to strengthen bilateral relations and exchange views on regional developments.
Minister Abdel-Aati affirmed the depth and historic nature of relations between Egypt and Greece, noting the significant qualitative progress achieved in recent years, particularly following the elevation of ties to the level of a strategic partnership.
He expressed Egypt’s aspiration to further expand co-operation in economic, trade and investment fields, and to broaden bilateral frameworks to include new areas of collaboration, while also appreciating Greece’s consistent support for Egypt within European Union institutions.
The discussion also addressed the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, with Minister Abdel-Aati outlining Egypt’s ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions and prioritise diplomatic solutions.
He also stressed the importance of supporting US–Iran negotiations as a means of reinforcing regional stability and security, underlining the necessity of relying on dialogue and diplomatic engagement to resolve current crises.
For his part, Minister Gerapetritis expressed Greece’s appreciation for Egypt’s mediation efforts and its role in promoting calm and de-escalation in the region.
The two ministers also exchanged views on developments in the Palestinian territories, said the Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Tamim Khallf.
He added that Minister Abdel-Aati stressed the importance of implementing the first phase of the US plan and advancing to the second phase, underlining the need for the Palestinian National Committee for the administration of Gaza to commence its work from within the Strip, alongside the swift deployment of an international stabilisation force.
Turning to Libya, Minister Abdel-Aati reaffirmed Egypt’s firm position on preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty and stability, and the importance of unifying its institutions.
He emphasised the need for a comprehensive Libyan-led political solution that reflects the aspirations of the Libyan people, alongside continued efforts to advance the political process towards holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
On Sudan, Minister Abdel-Aati reiterated the importance of safeguarding the country’s unity and territorial integrity, preserving its national institutions, and rejecting any external interference that could exacerbate the conflict or undermine prospects for a political settlement.
Both ministers agreed on the importance of maintaining close coordination and continued consultation within the framework of strategic relations between Egypt and Greece, supporting regional de-escalation efforts, and working jointly to prevent further deterioration of stability in the region.
