Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sweilem, discussed on Tuesday with German Ambassador in Cairo, Juergen Schulz and his delegation ways to strengthen co-operation and present regional water issues.
Sweilem highlighted deeply rooted ties binding Egypt and Germany over the past years, which has led to many water-related projects, voicing desire to continue partnerships between the two countries.
Ambassador Schulz emphasised Germany’s commitment to strengthening co-operation with Egypt, especially in water resources.
During the meeting, Sweilem reiterated Egypt’s ongoing support for African countries, particularly those in the Nile Basin.
The minister elaborated on Egypt’s projects in these countries, such as wastewater treatment, rainwater harvesting dams, solar-powered water wells in remote areas, river docks, and rain forecasting centers.
He stressed the importance of respecting international laws on rivers when developing projects in upstream countries.
Sweilem reviewed the negotiations on the Ethiopian dam, explaining that Egypt and Sudan have sought a fair, binding agreement for filling and operating the dam. However, Ethiopia’s refusal to co-operate has stalled these efforts.
He also noted that some Nile Basin countries signed a framework agreement without full consensus, which violates international water laws, overlooks the rights of Egypt and Sudan, and may increase divisions within the Nile Basin.
Sweilem has reaffirmed that managing international rivers requires an inclusive approach, where all basin countries are represented, decisions are unanimous, and the rights of all are protected.
