Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, hasstated that the ministry is expanding the use of renewable energy across its facilities, particularly pumping stations, as part of the state’s efforts to achieve sustainable development and enhance energy efficiency.
Sewilam made the remarks on Friday after receiving a report on renewable energy. The report said solar panel systems covering around 700 square metres have been installed at the two stations, with a total production capacity of about 87 kilowatts, contributing to meeting part of their electricity needs and reducing reliance on conventional power sources.
The minister said the project falls under the ministry’s plan to transform water pumping stations into “Green 2.0 Stations” powered by solar energy instead of fossil fuels, helping reduce pressure on Egypt’s electricity grid and cut carbon emissions.
Sewilam also stressed the ministry’s reliance on young engineers and second-generation leaders in developing water infrastructure, noting that expanding solar energy use supports Egypt’s green transition and efforts to address climate change.
