Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, announced the successful opening of Uruguay’s market to Egyptian onion and garlic exports, marking a significant boost for the country’s presence in Latin American markets.
The announcement followed a report from Head of the Agricultural Services Sector Ahmed Rizk and Head of the Central Administration for Agricultural Quarantine Mohamed El-Mansi, highlighting the results of technical negotiations and continuous efforts to expand Egypt’s global export footprint.
Mansi stated that the achievement resulted from intensive discussions between the Egyptian and Uruguayan sides, culminating in bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 20th session of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), held in Rome in mid-March.
All technical and sanitary requirements to ensure the quality and safety of Egyptian products were finalized.
The report indicated strong growth in exports of these crops so far in 2026, with Egyptian onion shipments totaling approximately 24,275 tonnes and garlic exports reaching 5,147 tonnes in the first quarter.
The Ministry of Agriculture affirmed its ongoing commitment to maintaining the quality of Egyptian produce and opening new markets, supporting the national economy, and reinforcing Egypt’s position as a global hub for high-quality agricultural exports.
