As part of a larger strategy to become a regional hub for logistics and transportation, Egypt has introduced a new service at the Mediterranean Damietta Port to transport dry and refrigerated cargo arriving from Europe.
The service is offered through the Ro-Ro shipping line that connects Trieste, Italy, with Damietta Port.
In order to create an integrated indirect transit route, goods arriving from Europe will be moved to the Red Sea’s Safaga Port before being shipped to Gulf countries.
The decision to exempt transit shipments heading to the Gulf markets from prior registration in the Advance Cargo Information (ACI) system has led to this action.
The move is expected to streamline processes and expedite the flow of cargo, particularly in light of persistent issues affecting regional transportation routes.
The Damietta Port has recently received the vessel “GALLIPOLI SEAWAYS,” carrying transit cargo from Europe, bound for Safaga and onward to the Gulf.
Authorities confirmed that all operational and customs procedures were handled efficiently.
Officials say the new service reflects major improvements at Damietta Port, particularly in digital systems and logistics efficiency. These upgrades foster Egypt’s position as a reliable transit corridor for global trade, especially for goods destined for Gulf markets.
The Damietta–Trieste Ro-Ro line- opened in November 2024- is a key contributor to the growth of trade between Egypt and Europe. It reduces costs and delivery times by using refrigerated trucks to ship perishable and agricultural goods more quickly.
The route is also recognised as a “green corridor” that encourages trade that is more environmently friendly.
The line also benefits from expedited customs procedures, operational incentives, and advanced electronic connectivity that facilitates fast and secure data exchange between ports and customs authorities in both countries.
The new service highlights Egypt’s ongoing efforts to boost transit trade and establish itself as a crucial conduit between Europe and the Gulf.
