CAIRO- Deputy Housing Minister for Infrastructure Affairs Sayyed Ismail had talks on Monday with a delegation of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) on progress made so far to implement the Fayyoum Wastewater Expansion Programme.
The Egyptian official and the EBRD’s delegation, led by the Bank’s Regional Director of Infrastructure for Middle East and North Africa, discussed the implementation of the first phase of the programme that includes the depollution of Lake Qarun, the third largest lake in Egypt and an important natural freshwater resource for economic activities in Fayyoum governorate.
The two sides also discussed obstacles facing the program, which is co-financed by the EBRD, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union (EU), at a total value of nearly 300 million euros.
The Project fully supports the Bank’s Green Economy Transition (“GET”) Approach which, among different goals, aims at scaling up the promotion of sustainability of natural resources use, to support pollution prevention and to avoid/reduce the degradation of ecosystems.
