Cairo, Egypt – Presidents Abdel Fattah El Sisi of Egypt and Azali Assoumani of the Comoros engaged in high-level talks Sunday, underscoring a shared vision for addressing pressing Arab and African developments. The discussions, as stated by President Sisi during a joint press conference, highlighted a “mutual understanding and alignment of views” on a spectrum of critical regional and international issues.
Key areas of focus included the ongoing complexities within the African Union, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the volatile situation in Sudan, evolving dynamics in the Horn of Africa, the imperative of Red Sea security, and concerted counterterrorism strategies. Both leaders acknowledged the pivotal role of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) in bolstering counterterrorism efforts across the region.
President Sisi affirmed Egypt’s strong commitment to fostering comprehensive cooperation with the Comoros across diverse sectors. These encompass vital areas such as healthcare, education, tourism, fisheries, energy, and infrastructure development, signaling a tangible commitment to mutual growth.
A significant outcome of the meeting was the agreement to actively enhance trade exchange between the two nations. Leveraging their shared membership in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) bloc, this initiative aims to bolster regional and continental integration while significantly strengthening intra-African trade.
President Sisi conveyed his profound appreciation for the enduring fraternal relations between Egypt and the Comoros, emphasizing the unifying strength of their shared Arab, African, and Islamic heritage. This common identity, he noted, provides a robust foundation for expanding and deepening collaboration across numerous sectors.
Furthermore, President Sisi reiterated the Egyptian government’s and its companies’ readiness to actively support development initiatives in the Comoros, particularly the Comores Emerging Plan (PCE 2030). This commitment includes the transfer of Egypt’s valuable development expertise and the implementation of impactful projects in various economic sectors within the Comoros and potentially other African nations.
The discussions also addressed critical developmental challenges facing the continent, including poverty alleviation, debt relief initiatives, and strategies for effectively addressing the far-reaching impacts of climate change.
Concluding their meeting, both Presidents firmly agreed on the paramount importance of maintaining unified African positions on key global issues and ensuring equitable African representation within prominent international institutions. This unified stance underscores a shared commitment to amplifying Africa’s voice and influence on the world stage.
