The Egyptian-Chinese joint air exercise, dubbed “Eagles of Civilisation 2026,” kicked off on Saturday.
The exercise, which will run for several days, involves a number of multi-role fighter aircraft of different types. It is being held at several Egyptian air bases.
The initial phases include theoretical and practical lectures aimed at standardising combat concepts and procedures between the two sides.
The exercise also features joint sorties and training on planning and managing joint air combat operations. It aims to facilitate the exchange of expertise and enhance the skills of the participating forces.
The exercise is being held as part of the Egyptian Armed Forces’ joint training programme with their counterparts from friendly and partner countries. The step aims to strengthen military co-operation across various fields.
A fleet of Chinese J-16 fighter jets arrived in Egypt ahead of the exercise, marking the aircraft’s first-ever deployment to Africa.
The aircraft and crews arrived at an Egyptian airbase on Friday morning after a 6,000-kilometre journey that lasted nine hours and required in-flight refuelling, according to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
The PLA said the participating personnel had begun preparations for the exercise. It previously said the drills would conclude early next month.
The China’s Defence Ministry said the exercise would focus on air combat tactics and air superiority operations, among other areas.
The ministry said the drills would strengthen trust and co-operation between the two militaries and contribute to regional peace and stability.
