GAZA CITY – A ceasefire began in the Gaza Strip on Sunday night after successful efforts by Egypt to defuse the crisis caused by spiraling escalations between the Palestinians and Israelis.

Egypt urged the Israeli and Palestinian sides to de-escalate and agree on an all-out and reciprocal ceasefire as of 23:30 (Palestine local time) on August 7, an official Egyptian source said earlier today.

Out of its keenness on ending the current confrontations in the Gaza Strip, Egypt intensified its contacts with the Israeli and Palestinian sides to end the escalations, the source also said.

Meantime, Egypt spares no effort to secure the release of detainees Khalil el Awawda and Bassam el Saedi as soon as possible and guarantee that the former is offered the treatment he needs, it added.
