Egypt and Australia celebrated the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations during a reception held by the Australian embassy in Cairo, coinciding with Australia’s National Day.

Representing the Egyptian government, Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, congratulated Australian Ambassador Axel Wabenhorst. In his address, Minister Farouk emphasised the “strength and depth” of the relationship, which he noted is firmly rooted in cooperation and mutual respect. He highlighted that the bond dates back to 1950, when Australia established its first Middle East embassy in Cairo.

Minister Farouk pointed to the steady progress in economic cooperation, with trade between the two countries reaching about $650 million in 2023, emphasizing the strong potential for greater investment and partnership.

He recalled the visit of Australia’s Governor-General Sam Mostyn to Egypt last April, during which she met with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to discuss expanding economic, trade, and investment cooperation.

Farouk also praised the Australian community of Egyptian origin for serving as a bridge of culture and friendship between the two peoples.

The minister invited Australian investors to explore opportunities in clean energy, green hydrogen, agriculture, tourism, technology, and mining, especially within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, a growing hub for international trade.

The minister reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening relations with Australia across various sectors to promote peace, development, and shared prosperity.
