Egypt is continuing its active participation in the 137th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council in London, with a delegation led by the Deputy Minister of Transport for Maritime Transport and the Head of the Maritime Transport and Logistics Sector, alongside Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the IMO.
The Ministry of Transport said in a statement on Wednesday that Egypt’s participation reflects its commitment to contributing to the development of international maritime policies and promoting safer, more secure and sustainable global shipping.
The Egyptian delegation took part in discussions on key agenda items, stressing the importance of greater transparency, equitable geographical representation within the IMO Secretariat, human resource development, and enhanced multilingualism to ensure broader participation by member states.
Egypt also voiced its support for Qatar’s bid to host the 2028 World Maritime Day Parallel Event, reaffirming Cairo’s full backing for the proposal.
In the coming days, the Council is expected to consider two Egyptian proposals. The first seeks to expand Arabic-language access to the IMO’s Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS), making the platform more accessible to Arab member states. The second focuses on strengthening the protection of international shipping lanes to enhance maritime safety and security while ensuring the uninterrupted flow of global trade and supply chains amid current challenges.
