ECSS deputy head hails joint op-ed on Gaza by leaders of Egypt, Jordan, France

Deputy Director of the Egyptian Center for Strategic Studies (ECSS) Mohamed Ibrahim el Deweiry Tuesday hailed the joint Le Monde opinion piece written by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Jordanian King Abdullah II and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Deweiry, in statements to MENA, said the the op-ed made the vision aimed at solving the crisis in Gaza crystal clear through calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war-wrecked enclave.

The article is of special importance because it was jointly written by world’s top three leaders involved in the crisis of Gaza, in particular with Egypt and Jordan considering the Palestinian issue an integral part of their national security, Deweiry said.

He added that the timing of publishing the opinion piece comes in tandem with the ongoing intensive negotiations that aim to reach a humanitarian pause in the Gaza Strip.

“The three leaders have underscored that resolving Gaza’s crisis entails three key axes; the first of which is the urgent measures should be implemented immediately, the second addresses steps that should be adopted in the post-war stage, which will eventually lead to a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, while the third track outlines principals that should be respect by all,” Deweiry said.

He shed light on the three leaders’ call for an end to “the war in Gaza and the catastrophic human suffering it causes.”

“The two-state solution will. It is the only credible path to guaranteeing peace and security for all,” the opinion peace that was published by Politico newspaper read.

“Faced with the intolerable number of victims, we, the heads of state of Egypt, France and Jordan, demand the immediate and unconditional implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2728,” the three heads of state wrote, Deweiry said.

He quoted the leaders as saying: “As we urge all parties to abide by all relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions, we warn against the dangerous consequences of an Israeli offensive on Rafah, where about 1.5 million Palestinian civilians have sought refuge. Such an offensive would only bring more death and suffering, heighten the risks and consequences of mass displacement of the people of Gaza and threaten regional escalation.

“We reiterate our equal respect for all lives. We condemn all violations and abuses of international humanitarian law, including all acts of violence, terrorism and indiscriminate attacks on civilians. Protecting civilians is a fundamental legal obligation for all parties and the cornerstone of international humanitarian law. Violating this obligation is absolutely prohibited.

“U.N. agencies, including the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, and humanitarian actors play a critical role in relief operations in Gaza. They must be protected and granted full access, including in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. We condemn the killing of humanitarian aid workers, most recently the attack against World Central Kitchen’s aid convoy.

“We, the leaders of Egypt, France and Jordan, are determined to continue stepping up our efforts to meet the humanitarian, medical and health needs of the civilian population of Gaza, in close coordination with the U.N. system and regional partners,”Deweiry quoted the op-ed that was published by the Washington Post newspaper.
