Tanta University on Wednesday celebrated the launch of the Differently Abled initiative by the Ministry of Social Solidarity.
The ministry selected Tanta University to launch the initiative at the level of universities.
Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine el-Kabbaj, Governor of Gharbiya Tarek Rahmi, and President of Tanta University Dr. Mahmoud Zaki attended the event, during which a documentary on the initiative and the talents of differently abled people was shown.
Dr. Zaki said in his speech to the event that Egypt has witnessed tremendous progress in the support and empowerment of people of determination and people with special needs.
This progress was reflected in an event attended by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on December 5 last year to declare that these heroes are the true treasure of Egypt in a new era of empowerment in the New Republic.
The contribution of differently abled people is increasing day by day in shaping the nation’s present and building its future as development partners, Dr. Zaki said.
The Ministry of Social Solidarity has made outstanding achievements to support and empower people of determination in co-operation with all state institutions, Dr. Zaki added.
People with disabilities are provided with LE5 billion annually in cash support, which also covers the tuition expenses for 300,000 disabled students, he said.
The ministry has issued an integrated services card, provided sign interpreters at universities, trained disabled persons in a variety of skills, and created the National Fund for Persons with Disabilities, he added.
Supporting students of determination is top priority for the university, which has plans to support people of determination and people with special abilities in sports, the arts, social and cultural events throughout the year, the university president said.
El-Kabbaj said her ministry will safeguard the rights of people with disabilities.
