CAIRO – Proceedings of Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta 7th Intl. conference titled “Fatwa and Sustainable Development Goals”, kicked off Monday under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

Scholars and Muftis from 90 countries will attend the religious event along with representatives of the United Nations and the World Health Organization.

A documentary will be screened at the start of the meeting to clarify the targets of religions and the importance of development as part of sustainability.

Minister of Awqaf Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa will address the event on behalf of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli.

Senior Advisor to Egypt’s Mufti and Secretary-General for the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, Dr. Ibrahim Negm, said the international conference is a religious summit that brings together experts preluding to the upcoming climate change summit that will be hosted by Egypt’s Sharm al-Sheikh in November.

Dr. Negm noted that this year’s conference highlights and implements many quranic principles that call for the development of humanity and the construction of Earth.

He added that the closing session will include many initiatives that aim to support the goals of sustainable development.

Dr. Yousef Amer, Head of the Senate’s Religious Affairs Committee, said that the conference’s theme reflects a primary role of man, i.e. the construction of earth.

Dr. Amer noted that it is part of our religion to comprehend and address the changes in reality to preserve the higher objectives of the Shari’ah, praising the efforts of Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta in this regard.
