COPENHAGEN– Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen commended Egypt’s pivotal role in promoting stability in the Middle East, underscoring the strong and historic ties between the two nations.
Her remarks came during a joint press conference, on Saturday, with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi as part of his state visit to Denmark.
Frederiksen expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s diplomatic efforts in the region and thanked President Sisi for the “open, constructive, and candid discussions” held during their talks.
She emphasized that Egypt is a key partner for Denmark and the European Union, highlighting the importance of their collaboration in addressing pressing regional and global challenges.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated, “The new strategic partnership between Egypt and Denmark is a testament to our long-standing and robust bilateral relations. It is a highly promising partnership with great significance for environmental preservation, especially as Egypt is a strategic regional partner in addressing climate change and advancing the green transition.”
During a joint press conference with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Frederiksen highlighted the vast opportunities for collaboration in Egypt’s energy sector and commended the productive cooperation in combating irregular migration. She noted that this cooperation benefits the peoples of both Africa and Europe,” and applauded Egypt’s extensive diplomatic efforts, particularly in relation to the Gaza crisis.
The Danish prime minister acknowledged the heavy burden Egypt carries in tackling illegal migration, expressing her country’s eagerness to work with Egypt to confront this challenge and enhance efforts to combat human trafficking.
Frederiksen emphasized that close political dialogue lies at the heart of Denmark’s partnership with Egypt. She pointed to Denmark’s upcoming membership in the United Nations Security Council and Egypt’s influential role in the African Union’s Peace and Security Council as crucial avenues for advancing collaboration on shared challenges.
Looking ahead, the Danish PM reaffirmed the joint commitment to strengthening ties between the African Union and the European Union. She stressed that Denmark’s upcoming presidency of the EU provides an opportunity to address pressing global issues, particularly peace and security.
She also noted the importance of human rights cooperation between the two nations, highlighting ongoing dialogue and the potential for deeper engagement through their respective human rights institutions.
Reflecting on global developments, Frederiksen remarked, “The world has changed since our meeting in Cairo last year, and unfortunately, not for the better. Europe faces growing instability and insecurity.” She emphasized the profound global impact of the war in Ukraine, particularly on food security, and commended the shared Egyptian-Danish commitment to defending the United Nations Charter. Frederiksen concluded by describing this stance as essential during such challenging times.
“We are deeply troubled by the situation in Gaza, and there must be an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, along with the release of hostages,” Danish premier Frederiksen said during a joint press conference with President Sisi.
She emphasized Egypt’s crucial role in mediating the crisis and expressed gratitude to President Sisi for his leadership in this vital effort.
Frederiksen underscored the shared stance of Egypt and Denmark in advocating for a peaceful resolution to the Gaza conflict, providing humanitarian aid to civilians, and ensuring regional stability.“A two-state solution is the only viable path to resolving this crisis. While it remains a challenging goal, we must continue working toward a just peace in the Middle East and the stability of the region,” she added.
In her concluding remarks, Frederiksen highlighted the enduring partnership between Egypt and Denmark.
“Egypt and Denmark have a long history of collaboration, and thanks to our strategic partnership, this relationship grows stronger each day. In a world marked by conflicts and instability, building strong partnerships is the way forward,” she said, reaffirming her commitment to enhancing cooperation for the benefit of both nations.
