The Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity has launched its largest convoy to Khaila in Basateen, north Cairo, in co-operation with the Ministry of Culture and civil society institutions.
The drive comes in response to directives by the political leadership to assist the most vulnerable in society by providing services for residents of alternative housing projects built on the site of slum areas.
The convoy will stage community development awareness seminars and early childhood development services.
The convoy, which also includes a medical component, started yesterday at the Khaila Youth Centre, where a team of young volunteers distributed food boxes and free clothing coupons.
Up to 15,000 garments, 4,000 children’s toys, 2.7 tonnes of meat and 5 tonnes of fruits have been offered to 1,360 families who were moved to alternative housing.
The Khaila project covers 2,268 households, an official statement said.
The Ministry of Culture is holding technical workshops and seminars on the negative effects of e-games and a children’s theatre in Khaila.
The development convoy was carried out in co-operation with development partners Tahya Misr Egypt Fund and the Ministry of Culture.
