One hundred civil associations from across the country were represented at the conference, ‘The Year of Civil Society — Development and Partnership in the New Republic’, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina yesterday.
Assistant Minister of Social Solidarity for Civil Society Institutions Affairs Ayman Abdel Mawgoud and Bibliotheca Alexandrina director Ahmed Abdullah Zayed attended the conference, which was jointly organised by the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
The conference reflects the interest of the political leadership, who declared 2022 Year of Civil Society, in civil society and its role in development.
The aim of the conference was to expand the base of civil society associations and non-government organisations (NGOs) to participate in the sustainable development agenda and the vision of Egypt 2030.
Abdel Mawgoud said Law 149/2019, which regulates civil society work, encapsulates the vision of the Egyptian government and its belief in the importance of civil society in devising frameworks of participation for sustainable development goals.
“The ministry and civil society institutions are partnering in many ministry initiatives and projects, such as the Wa’y (Awareness), which broadcasts positive messages on a number of important development issues, economic empowerment and youth training through the Forsa (Opportunity) programme,” Abdul-Mawgod said.
“The electronic system for NGOs, which is expected to be launched by the end of this year, will enable us to announce all civil society interventions with transparency in all fields,” Abdel Mawgoud said in an interview with The Egyptian Gazette.
Civil society will be taking part in the COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh next week, Abdel Mawgoud said.
