Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced on Sunday that the country’s unemployment rate declined to 7.3 per cent in Q2 of 2021 down from 7.4 per cent in Q1 of the same year.
CAPMAS said the data reflected a big drop by 2.3 per cent from the same quarter of the previous year.
According to the agency, the estimated size of the workforce (employed and unemployed) stood at 29.115 million individuals, compared to 29.284 million individuals during the previous quarter, reflecting a decrease of 0.6 per cent.
The urban labour force reached 12.981 million individuals, while in the countryside it reached 16.134 million individuals.
The size of the workforce for males reached 24.233 million individuals, while females reached 4.882 million individuals.
CAPMAS said that the number of the unemployed registered 2.155 million, or 7.3 per cent of the total work force, compared with 2.155 million unemployed in Q1 of 2021. This constituted a decrease of 40,000 unemployed, or 1.9 per cent, and a decrease of 459,000 unemployed for the same quarter of the previous year, down by 17.8 per cent.
CAPMAS added that the number of workers reached 27 million, while it was 27.129 million in the previous quarter, reflecting a decrease of 0.5 per cent. The number of urban workers reached 11.524 million, while the number of workers in the countryside reached 15.476 million workers.
This was due to the state reinforcing some precautionary measures, and issuing a decision to reduce the number of workers with the beginning of the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
