Minister of the Public Business Sector, Mohamed Shimi, inaugurated on Tuesday the third International Hydrogen Conference in Africa, hosted by Egypt for the first time and organised by the German-African Business Association (Afrika-Verein).

The conference, held under the theme “Connecting Hydrogen Projects in Africa,” brought together ambassadors and representatives of major local and international investment companies.

In his opening remarks, Minister Shimi highlighted the strong and long-standing partnership between Egypt and Germany, describing it as a model for co-operation in industry, energy, and green transformation.

He said the conference reflects Egypt’s growing role as a regional hub for clean energy in Africa and the Middle East.

Shimi explained that Egypt has adopted a clear national vision for transitioning to a green economy and expanding the share of renewable energy in its power mix.

The country has signed several major solar and wind energy agreements, providing a solid foundation for producing green hydrogen at competitive prices, supported by Egypt’s natural resources, strategic location, and technical expertise.

The minister noted that the Holding Company for Chemical Industries, affiliated with his ministry, is implementing several green hydrogen projects in partnership with international investors and government agencies as part of Egypt’s plan to boost local industry and strengthen green value chains.

He also highlighted the pioneering role of Kima Company in Aswan, which was among the first in the world — and the first in Africa — to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis powered by the High Dam since 1960, marking Egypt’s early leadership in the field.

Shimi added that the Egyptian government has introduced a package of investment and legislative incentives to support green hydrogen projects and enhance their financial viability, attracting growing investor interest.
