CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Aati has discussed via video conference with FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa AbdulHakim Elwaer ways to promote Cairo’s cooperation with the United Nations’ food agency in water-related areas.
The two sides also probed bilateral cooperation during international events organized by the irrigation ministry to put water on the climate action agenda; through the fifth edition of Cairo Water Week, in addition to relevant activities set to be held as part of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27).
Cairo Water Week will be held this year under the theme “Water at the Heart of Climate Action”, Abdel Aati said, noting that the Egyptian State believes in the importance of water in the climate change file.
Recommendations from the water week will be discussed during COP27, to be hosted by Egypt in November, he added.
Meanwhile, Elwaer affirmed FAO’s keenness to provide all forms of support and coordination during Cairo Water Week and COP27, with a view to yielding the best results for the UN 2023 Water Conference – formally known as the 2023 Conference for the Midterm Comprehensive Review of Implementation of the UN Decade for Action – that will take place at the UN Headquarters in New York in March 2023.
