CAIRO – The Egyptian Cabinet’s media center has denied news about obliging citizens to register a cell phone number from a certain operator as a condition to update their data on ration cards.
In a statement Sunday, the center said it had contacted the Supply Ministry, which dismissed the news as baseless.
Data updates do not require a cellular number from a certain mobile company, the Ministry said, stressing numbers offered by the different cellular operators in Egypt are accepted.
It said, however, that the number should be that of the breadwinner for whom the ration card is issued.
A deadline to provide a cellular number has been extended until June 30, the Ministry made it clear.
The center urged all media outlets to verify any information from bodies concerned before circulating false news that might create confusion.
