Cairo Governor Khaled Abdul Aal yesterday met with Governor of Tokyo Yuriko Koike on her first visit to Egypt with a high-ranking delegation for co-operation talks.
Japanese Ambassador in Cairo Oka Hiroshi and Egypt’s Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ayman Kamel attended the meeting.
The Tokyo governor is here for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, which ends 18 November.
In recognition of the friendly ties between Egypt and Japan, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi ordered that a major arterial road east of Cairo be named after the late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The Cairo governor reviewed mega-projects, notably the New Administrative Capital (NAC), undertaken by the Egyptian government during the past eight years.
For her part, the Tokyo governor voiced hope of further co-operation and exchanges between the two cities in education, solid waste disposal, urban transport network improvement, and ties between secondary schools in both cities.
Yuriko invited Abdul Aal to Tokyo for the international conference on Global City Network for Sustainability (G-Nets) next February.
Co-operation relations between the two governorates date back to 23 October 1990 with the signing of a friendship agreement.
