Cairo Governorate has taken preliminary steps to set up its first bicycle sharing scheme.
Five docking stations for Cairo Bike have been set up in Cairo’s downtown Tahrir Square, Abdelmonem Riyadh Square, Mohamed Farid Street, Falaki Street and Abdul Khalek Tharwat Street.

The scheme will begin with 500 bicycles fitted with GPS trackers and will later be expanded with docking stations by underground metro stops in downtown Cairo, Zamalek and Garden City.
Cairo Governor Khaled Abdul Al said Cairo Bike coincides with preparations for the UN Climate Conference (COP 27), slated for November this year in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

The governorate hopes to cut down harmful emissions in the capital and tackle the rising dependence on cars as part of efforts to promote the use of healthy and environment-friendly transport and alleviate congestion, the governor added.
Cairo Bike is the outcome of a partnership between the governorate and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), and financed by the Swiss non-profit Drosos Foundation, with technical support and supervision by the Institute for Transport and Development Policy (ITDP).
