Greater cooperation between Egypt and Korea in higher education was the focus of official talks Tuesday.

President of Ain Shams University (ASU) Mahmoud el-Meteini and Ambassador of the Republic of  Korea in Cairo, Hong Jin-wook  met to discuss expanding cooperation between the embassy and the university.

Ambassador Hong said ASU is one of the top three universities in Egypt with such distinguished faculties as Al-Alsun (languages), which is spearheading Egypt’s globalisation as a leading interpreting and translation education hub with its 14 departments offering 18 language courses.

The envoy hailed the Korean language department, established in 2005, as the first of its kind in the Middle East and Africa region, playing a major role in introducing Korean studies to the region and promoting understanding between Korea and Egypt.

The influx of top students into the Korean language department reflects the love of Egypt’s young generation for Korean language and culture and language, as well as tremendous potential for future employment opportunities, the envoy said.

The envoy praised the 300 students who had graduated so far from the department employed for their outstanding knowledge of Korean language and culture and language.

The Korean business community in Egypt recognises the achievements of the department, he said.

The two officials also discussed how to develop the Korean language department further as a beacon of educational cooperation and prepare students as future diplomatic assets for both countries.

They also explored bilateral cooperation between universities of both countries in the field of global affairs and international business.
