Egypt’s Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem, held discussions on Monday with Chairman of the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI), Mohamed El-Sewedy, and members of the Petroleum and Mining Industries Chamber on how to make better utilisation of the country’s mineral resources, and expand local manufacturing.
The meeting reviewed key challenges facing the mining sector, including increasing the added value on raw materials, reducing carbon emissions in line with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, and the limited use of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) due to quality concerns in the local market.
Hashem stressed that mining is a sector of priority for attracting investments, boosting exports, and reducing imports.
He also outlined plans to support the transition towards a green industrial economy. This includes improving energy efficiency, promoting renewable energy, and preparing energy maps for industrial zones to determine whether solar or wind power is most suitable.
The government is also encouraging private sector participation in renewable energy projects and energy-saving initiatives, the minister said.
In addition, discussions are underway to diversify alternative fuel sources for cement and energy-intensive industries, with technical support provided through specialised industry centres.
For his part, El-Sewedy emphasised the FEI’s role in the Environmental Compliance Office in supporting companies through financing, clean technologies, and waste management solutions, contributing to Egypt’s sustainable development goals.
