Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam and Netherlands ambassador in Cairo Peter Mollema on Monday held co-operation talks on water resource management.
The two sides reviewed the existing collaboration in the Joint Cooperation in Applied Research Programme (JCAR) to boost scientific ties with the Netherlands.
They also addressed Action on Water, Adaptation, and Resilience (AWARe) international initiative, launched in November 2022.
The two officials also discussed preparations of plans to reuse of agricultural drain water. This scheme will entail a feasibility study on desalinating waste water through low-cost techniques for cultivation purposes and calculating the salt content in drains in the Delta, a press release posted on Facebook said.
Discussions also focused on modern methods of coastal protection with environment-friendly materials.
On the efforts aiming to boost the principles of governance in water management, the minister pointed to the several measures taken by his ministry to achieve these them.
These included the new law on water resources and irrigation and its executive regulations, in addition to 16 ministerial decisions cabinet resolutions for the implementation of the legislation.
The law is a key tool in for developing and improving water management, with the legislation including provisions for forming associations of water beneficiaries and activating their role to achieve more community participation in water management, the minister added.
