We are only few hours away from the announcement of the Oscar winners for this year. And while it’s hard to predict which movie will win as most of the nominated films deserve to get awards, Apple TV+ movie CODA and Netflix’s The Power of the Dog are tipped for Best Picture. Probably, one of them will be the winner.

Ten movies have been nominated for Best Picture — Belfast, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, West Side Story, The Power of the Dog and CODA.

However, both CODA and The Power of the Dog present new and smart ideas and scripts.

CODA tells the story of Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones), a high school student and a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), who lives with her family. She is the interpreter for the family, who consider her their only way of communication with the outside world. However, she has an opportunity to study music abroad and that means leaving her family. The film is emotional, giving deaf people a voice and calling for engaging them in society. The script is superb and deaf actors were cast in supporting roles, such as Troy Kotsur, who plays the father. He is also an Osacr nominee for best supporting actor, and Marlee Matlin who plays the mother.

The Power of the Dog is a Western, directed by Jane Campion, set in Montana in 1925. Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Jesse Plemons) are brothers leading a cattle drive. There is a tension between them. George falls in love with Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst), who gets belittled by Phil. George later marries her and brings her and Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), her son, to live on the ranch, but Phil rejects them both.

The movie is a psychological drama which starts slowly in events to give time for the characters to develop. It delves deep into human nature and analyses feelings like jealousy, hatred and love.

Among the nominees for best actress award is Kristen Stewart for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer. Others nominees for the award are Jessica Chastain, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Olivia Colman, The Lost Daughter, Penélope Cruz, Parallel Mothers and Nicole Kidman, Being the Ricardos. However, Stewart was brilliant in capturing Diana’s inner feelings as the unhappy wife who knows that her husband is cheating. She does not depend solely on externals and makeup.

For best actor, Will Smith could be the winner for his remarkable portrayal as Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams. The film King Richard is based on the true story about how Venus and Serena became who they are after the coaching by their father. Other nominees for the award are Javier Bardem, Being the Ricardos, Benedict Cumberbatch, The Power of the Dog, Andrew Garfield, Tick, tick … Boom! And Denzel Washington, The Tragedy of Macbeth.

For best animated feature award, Encanto is most likely to win as it has lovely colourful scenes, creative characters and energetic music and songs. Other nominations for the same category are Flee, Luca, The Mitchells vs. the Machines and Raya and the Last Dragon.
