CAIRO – The Arab League (AL) General Secretariat called on international, regional and human rights organisations to intervene to secure the immediate release of hunger-striking Palestinian detainee Hisham Abu Hawash.

In a report issued Monday by the Palestine Sector and the Occupied Arab Territories, the pan-Arab body urged the international community to press Israeli occupation troops to abide by principles of International Law, especially the Fourth Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War.

The report urged the prompt release of the Palestinian detainee, highlighting severe deterioration in his health condition.

Abu Hawash, a Palestinian from the small town of Dura, near Hebron, has been on a hunger strike in protest of his detention by Israel for 140 days.

According to the report, the International Committee for the Red Cross warned that Abu Hawash’s prolonged fast had placed him “in critical condition” that could potentially lead to his death.

He was detained in Israel in October 2020 and has been held under Israel’s policy of administrative detention, meaning that he has not been charged with a crime.
