The Council of the League of Arab States has called for an immediate cessation of all clashes in the Sudan and the expedited return to the political track for solving the crisis.

The call was contained in a statement the council issued following an extraordinary meeting at the level of permanent delegates on Sunday.

The extraordinary meeting was chaired by Egypt which, together with Saudi Arabia, had called for its convening to discuss the developments in the Sudan.

The council emphasised the necessity of immediate cessation of all armed clashes in order to stop bloodshed and maintain the civilians’ safety and security, as well as the potentials of the Sudanese people and the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, the council said in its concluding statement.

The delegates stressed the league’s readiness to exert all efforts in order to help Sudan end the crisis in a sustainable manner. They also called on Arab ambassadors to Khartoum to coordinate inter se and remain in constant contact with the authorities and the Sudanese sides.

The Arab ambassadors to Khartoum were also urged to extend the support deemed necessary for contributing to the restoration of stability in the Sudan, the council added.

Meanwhile, the council voiced deep sorrow over the fall of victims in the recent clashes, extending sincere condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the entire people of the Sudan.

It also stressed the importance of speedy return to the peaceful path to resolve the Sudanese crisis, in addition to establishing a new phase to help meet the expectations of the Sudanese people and contribute to bolstering security and political and economic stability, the statement said.

In the statement, the permanent delegates of AL member-states warned of the gravity of the violent escalation that the Sudan is now witnessing and of the ensuing dangerous consequences at both domestic and regional levels.

This, the council added, makes it imperative upon  all sides to  prioritise the interests of the state and people of the Sudan through exercising maximum restraint and working together to calm the situation  and avert aggravation and deterioration.
