Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Ghiet on Saturday welcomed a resolution that was overwhelmingly passed by the United Nations General Assembly calling on the Security Council to reconsider Palestine’s membership to the UN.
Abul Ghiet said that the wide-margin vote in favor of Palestine reflects the growing global support for it and its full membership in the UN, according to Spokesman for the Arab League’s Secretary General Gamal Roshdi.
The AL chief stressed that countries convinced with the two-state solution should accelerate steps towards achieving this goal, adding that recognizing the state of Palestine and granting it a full UN membership represents a crucial move along such a path that aims to establish an independent Palestinian state.
The arrogant response of Israel’s representative to the overwhelming voting in favor of Palestine reflects its true stance toward the rules-based international order, Abul Ghiet said.
He called for continuing diplomatic efforts to pressure parties that are still providing political cover and pretexts for Israel within the UN and the Security Council.
