Addressing the inaugural session of the Arab Regional Forum on Sustainable Development 2022, which kicked off in Beirut earlier Tuesday, Abul-Gheit touched upon repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic for the Arab world; especially the alarming rise in poverty rates, which poses growing threats to security and stability.
The Forum is organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), which is acting to boost cooperation with the Arab League to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, according to an AL statement issued here today.
Covid-19 has negatively affected food security, Abdul-Gheit told the gathering, adding that water scarcity and climate change, together with the war in Ukraine, have had all the bad effect on the Arab world.
Participants in the Forum are set to review the Sustainable Development Goals 4, 5, 14, 15 and 17.
The Arab Regional Forum will tackle good practices and policy solutions to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, in line with regional priorities and challenges.
