Secretary General of the Arab League (AL) Ahmed Abul Gheit has underlined the importance of Arab-European joint action to hold an international conference for peace, to be hosted by Spain, as soon as possible.
Abul Gheit’s remarks came on Thursday when he received Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, who is currently on a visit to Egypt as part of his tour in the region.
Albares delivered a speech before the AL Council at the permanent delegates level, focusing on the Gaza war and the priority for ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.
Abul Gheit discussed with Albares the latest developments on the Gaza war, spokesman for the AL secretary general Gamal Roshdy said.
The secretary general lauded Spain’s firm stance on backing the Palestinians, citing the occupation forces’ unprecedented massacres.
The Spanish minister voiced his country’s readiness for recognizing the Palestinian state as soon as possible.
Abul Gheit also urged the Spanish minister to support that recognition in the European Union as an important step to achieve the two-state solution.
