Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyeb will participate in the opening ceremony of the 29th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) that will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on November 11-22.
In a statement, Al Azhar said that Tayyeb’s participation in the international event comes at the invitation he received from President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev during his visit to Al Azhar headquarters in Cairo in June.
Tayyeb is scheduled to deliver an important speech that addresses the issue of environmental preservation and ways to confront the global climate crisis from an Islamic perspective, the statement added.
The speech will also tackle means of benefiting from the influence of religious leaders in raising awareness about climate action.
The Grand Imam will hold meetings on the sidelines of the conference with several officials, including religious leaders, thinkers and cultural figures from all over the world. The goal of these meetings is to unify perspectives and activate joint efforts in addressing global challenges such as climate issues and wars and conflicts affecting the world, particularly the most vulnerable groups, including displaced persons, the poor and the homeless.
