CAIRO – Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation El Sayed El Qusier conferred on Monday with Interim Director General of World Fish Centre Essam Yassin Mohammed, World Fish’s Country Director for Egypt Ahmed Nasrallah and Chair of the Centre Board of Trustees Baba Yusuf Abubakar on means of boosting cooperation between the two sides.
In a statement, El Qusier asserted the necessity for the World Fish Centre to play a tangible role in the development of fisheries wealth in Egypt and Africa through the center’s country premises in Cairo.
The meeting also took up future co-operation between the ministry and the center in outlining a future plan to achieve the objectives of the centre and optimise its assets and upgrading them, he added.
The World Fish Center director, for his part, asserted the importance of the centre’s presence in Egypt and its co-operation with the Egyptian institutions topped by the agriculture ministry.
Meanwhile, Abubakar affirmed the importance of co-operation with African states, noting that Egypt’s hosting of the UN Climate Conference in November provides a chance for outlining the necessary vision for reaching out a special agreement on renewing the term of Egypt’s hosting the centre.
The World Fish Center is formerly known as the International Centre for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM). It was founded in 1971. WorldFish is an international, nonprofit research organisation that harnesses the potential of fisheries and aquaculture to reduce hunger and poverty.
In the developing world, more than one billion poor people obtain most of their animal protein from fish and 250 million depend on fishing and aquaculture for their livelihoods. WorldFish is a member of CGIAR, a global agriculture research partnership for a food secure future.
