Cairo, Moscow keen to push forward key projects

Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to advancing strategic co-operation with Russia and promoting regional stability.

This reaffirmation was made during a telephone call Minister Abdel-Aati made with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday.

Abdel-Aati underlined the depth of Egyptian-Russian relations and the growing momentum across all fields of co-operation, particularly economic and trade ties. He expressed Cairo’s appreciation for the strategic partnership framework with Moscow, underscoring the need to continue pushing forward key projects, most notably the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, to expand Russian investment and deepen bilateral collaboration.

Turning to regional developments, the foreign minister stressed the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803 and progressing to the second phase of the US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza. He asserted the need to enable the International Stabilisation Force to fulfil its mandate and consolidate the ceasefire.

Abdel-Aati also reviewed the situation in Sudan, highlighting Egypt’s efforts within the Quartet Mechanism to halt the conflict and safeguard the unity and territorial integrity of the Sudanese state.

The phone discussion also coveredlatest developments in Lebanon and Syria. Abdel-Aati reiterated Egypt’s consistent support for Lebanon’s unity, sovereignty, security and stability. He reaffirmed Egypt’s position on respecting Syria’s unity and territorial integrity, rejecting any actions or foreigninterference that could undermine the country’s stability. He called for the activation of a comprehensive political process that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people.

The two ministers also probed developments related to the Iranian nuclear file. Abdel-Aati emphasised the importance of continued efforts to de-escalate tensions, build confidence and create conditions conducive to resuming negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive agreement that reflects the interests of all parties and enhances regional security.

In addition, the two sides discussed the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, with Abdel-Aati reiterating Egypt’s long-standing position in favour of intensifying diplomatic efforts and dialogue to reach peaceful settlements that preserve international security and stability.
