Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdel-Aati stressed the urgent need for coordinated international action to de-escalate the mounting regional tensions and advance a political settlement to the Palestinian issue.
This came during a phone call on Wednesday with Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The call focused on efforts to contain the ongoing military escalation in the region and the latest developments in the Palestinian file. Kallas expressed strong appreciation for the de-escalation efforts led by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, highlighting Egypt’s active mediation role. She also warned of the serious repercussions of continued escalation on global energy security and the international economy, underscoring EU’s reliance on Egypt’s sustained diplomatic engagement, particularly as demonstrated in the Gaza file.
For his part, Minister Abdel-Aati outlined Egypt’s position aimed at curbing escalation, emphasising the pressing need for enhanced coordination between Egypt and the EU to advance diplomatic pathways and political solutions, and to prevent a broader expansion of the conflict. He also condemned attacks on Gulf states and stressed the importance of an immediate halt to such actions.
The phone discussion also covered developments in the Palestinian territories. Minister Abdel-Aati strongly condemned attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian civilians and their property in the West Bank, describing them as flagrant violations of international law that undermine prospects for peace.
The minister also briefed the EU official on Egypt’s ongoing efforts to ensure the implementation of all points of the second phase of the plan proposed by Donald Trump. This includes the deployment of an international stabilisation force and the entry of a Gaza administrative committee to begin its work, paving the way for the Palestinian Authority to fully resume its responsibilities.
In this context, Abdel-Aati stressed the importance of intensifying international and EU efforts to protect Palestinian civilians and to help create conditions conducive for relaunching a credible political process aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive settlement to the Palestinian cause.
Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and consultation within the framework of the strategic partnership between Egypt and the EU. They reaffirmed that diplomacy remains the only viable path to prevent further instability and escalation across the region.
