While the number of vaccination centres has been increased from 580 to 657 nationwide, larger-scale centres will be set up in the governorates of Sharqiya and Assiout.

This statement by Health Minister Hala Zayed came during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli in New el-Alamein City.

The minister reviewed the latest developments in local and international efforts to combat the coronavirus.

Statements by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) underline the importance of vaccination in view of the spread of the delta variant, the minister added.

Vaccination will save lives and reduce the need for hospitalisation, Zayed said.

She reviewed vaccination regulations for education ministry workers before the start of the new school year and gave a breakdown of quantities of doses of AstraZeneca, Sinova, Sputnik and Johnson & Johnson so far received in Egypt.

The prime minister Madbouli said each university president would be responsible for following up the vaccination of all university employees and students as the health ministry will provide the vaccines.

University presidents will prepare periodic reports to be referred to the minister of higher education, Madbouli said.

The cabinet also approved the establishment of Badr University in the Upper Egypt governorate of Assiout.

The university will have departments for artificial intelligence, applied health technology, biotechnology, dentistry and veterinary medicine.

Another university will be set up in Sadat city, Menoufia Governorate and on the Cairo-Suez desert road near Badr city.
