More than 6,000 projects have applied for the presidential initiative Smart Green Projects, a government minister announced on Tuesday.
Egyptian Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala el-Saeed said phase one of the initiative is over, as no more applications will be accepted.
The 6,281 applications received from all over the country are to be assessed in phase two, the minister said.
An electronic evaluation platform has been designed with an assessment tool and a mechanism for preserving the documents used in the process, the minister added.
The response reflects the extent of interest and awareness of the initiative, el-Saeed said, noting that training courses and workshops in the governorates, in person and online, introduced the objectives of the initiative.
Al-Gharbiya tops all governorates with 1,227 applicants and Cairo ranks first in terms of completed application evaluations.
For his part, initiative coordinator Hesham Badr described the scheme “unprecedented at local and global level”.
The philosophy behind the initiative is the empowerment of all governorates and municipalities in Egypt, while reaching all social and geographical groups to urge them offer their projects, Badr said.
The initiative seeks to disseminate social awareness on the challenges of climate change and the technological capabilities to face them.
It also aims to offer ‘Egyptian solutions’ to climate change challenges through the projects.
