Some 466 people (184 Egyptians, 272 Sudanese, 5 Britons, an American and a Kenyan) who had been stranded in Sudan were welcomed on their arrival at the port of Safaga yesterday morning by Red Sea Governor Amr Hanafi and head of the Red Sea Ports Authority Mohamed Abdel Rahim.
Egypt is making great efforts to evacuate its citizens from Sudan, Hanafi said, noting that co-ordination with Sudanese authorities was instrumental in providing safe passage for Egyptians to their homeland, in addition to laying on an airlift between Cairo and Sudan to bring all Egyptians wishing to return by military aircraft.
Meanwhile, a team of representatives of several international organisations visited the Qastal on the Egyptian-Sudanese border.
The team of representatives of UNICEF, the United Nations Development Program, the World Health Organisation and the World Food Programme was briefed on services for those returning from Sudan.
