The 45th meeting of the Arab Customs Director-Generals kicked off on Monday at the premises of the Arab League’s General Secretariat in Cairo.

Executive Director of the Customs Affairs Sector at the United Arab Emirates Alia Muhammad Al-Marmoom chaired the meeting.

Giving a word at the opening session, Marmoom said the meeting reflected the Arab leaders’ keenness to achieve economic integration and improve the quality of life in Arab societies.

There is an Arab desire to provide all facilities and exert utmost efforts to fulfil the Arab peoples’ dream in forming the Arab Customs Union, he said, deeming it as an important step in achieving Arab economic unity, in light of the major regional and international challenges that require more joint and constructive work by all parties.

Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Affairs Sector at the Arab League Ali bin Ibrahim al-Maliki said the customs sector has a key role in facilitating trade, as it is responsible for implementing and following up on policies and decisions related to managing import and export operations and cross-border monitoring.

The meeting is scheduled to discuss a number of important topics, including following up on the implementation of the recommendations on customs-related issues made by the Economic and Social Council (ESC).

It will also review reports and recommendations of the Arab League’s customs procedures and information committee.

It will discuss several issues, including the approval of the provisions guide, advance decisions and the Arab guide to the procedures for obtaining licenses and the rules of practicing the customs clearance profession.
