UP to 21,105,477 million Egyptians have been screened by the Presidential Initiative for Screening and Treatment of Chronic Diseases and Early Detection of Kidney Disease, since it was launched in September 2021.

The Ministry of Health and Population made the announcement on Thursday.

The initiative underscores the state’s commitment to providing free, comprehensive preventive healthcare to all Egyptians, a ministry pres reease read.

Health Ministry Spokesman Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar highlighted that the initiative has been carried out through 3,601 primary healthcare units in all governorates.

It targets individuals aged 40 and above, as well as younger adults from 18 years with a history of chronic diseases, ensuring early detection and access to high-quality care at no cost, he said.

Screenings include blood pressure measurements, random and HbA1c blood sugar tests, lipid profiles, kidney function tests, and BMI assessments, accompanied by awareness sessions on risk factors and dedicated follow-up programmes.

Citizens diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes receive free monthly medications, while complex cases are referred to hospitals at the state’s expense, reducing the risk of kidney failure.

The initiative follows latest global guidelines in collaboration with the World Health Organisation, with continuous staff training and integration between primary and specialised care to ensure effective treatment.

Abdel-Ghaffar urged at-risk citizens, particularly those with high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of these conditions, to visit their nearest health unit to access these free services.

He emphasised that early detection is key to preventing serious complications and reaffirmed that safeguarding citizens’ health remains a top priority for the Egyptian state.
