Abou El enein hails Sharm el-Sheikh pact as blueprint for Middle East peace
GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — Leading an influential Egyptian delegation, Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM) Mohamed Abou El enein issued a forceful call from Geneva for an international parliamentary mobilization to ensure the full implementation of the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Agreement and support the reconstruction of Gaza.
Addressing the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Abou El enein, who participated as part of Egypt’s delegation headed by Speaker Counsellor Hanafi Gebali, stressed that “There can be no development without security, and no security without peace.”
A Model for Middle East Peace
Abou El enein lauded the Sharm el-Sheikh Agreement—which resulted from joint diplomatic efforts led by Egypt, the United States, and Qatar—as a “model of effective diplomacy and a first step toward a just peace in the Middle East.”
He affirmed that peace is the “cornerstone of prosperity and stability among nations,” arguing that its absence leads to the “retreat of civilization, and the restriction of human potential.” He noted that history proves that growth begins when the “fires of conflict” are extinguished and the “voice of reason and dialogue” is amplified.
The Deputy Speaker also paid tribute to Egyptian leadership, praising President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for his “balanced vision” and “pivotal role” in promoting regional stability and peaceful solutions. He also acknowledged President Donald Trump for initiating constructive peace efforts.
Abou El enein asserted that the Sharm el-Sheikh Summit demonstrated that “the will for peace and dialogue is stronger than the sound of arms,” and that the agreement opens a new chapter for enduring peace, promoting regional integration in investment, education, and technology.
Global Parliamentary Call to Action
From the IPU podium, the MP delivered a unified parliamentary message urging world leaders to:
- Implement the Sharm el-Sheikh Agreement in good faith to safeguard the security and dignity of Palestinians.
- Seize the historic opportunity to build a secure and prosperous Middle East.
- Recognize that stability in the Middle East is an integral part of global peace.
Abou El enein declared that preserving the gains of Sharm el-Sheikh is a moral, political, and international duty, stating that any delay in implementation is a delay in achieving peace.
He also outlined five international parliamentary initiatives calling on global parliaments to work together on: - Consolidating the Gaza ceasefire and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches civilians.
- Supporting the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
- Ensuring a smooth transition toward Gaza reconstruction, supported by international security guarantees.
- Participating in the International Conference for Gaza Reconstruction hosted by Egypt next month and mobilizing necessary funds.
- Continuing efforts to grant full UN membership to the State of Palestine and end all unilateral measures in the West Bank.
He concluded this section by emphasizing the central role of human dignity: “true peace means respecting human dignity and applying international law comprehensively.”
Ten Principles for a Sustainable Global Economy
Concluding his speech, Abou El enein presented ten parliamentary principles for building a fairer and more sustainable global economic order, affirming that “Empowering people is the key to peace and development worldwide.”
These principles include: - Placing humanity at the center of economic policy.
- Building a global foundation on justice, not narrow interests.
- Transforming competition into equitable partnership.
- Reforming global finance and easing debt burdens on poor nations.
- Investing in people before infrastructure.
- Ensuring fairness and opportunity for the Global South.
- Democratizing knowledge as a universal human right.
Abou El Enein concluded by quoting President El-Sisi: “Peace is not made by governments alone, but by peoples — when they realize that yesterday’s adversaries can become tomorrow’s partners,” and stressed the time has come to “turn words into action.”
The high-level Egyptian delegation also included Counsellor Ahmed Saad El-Din, Counsellor Ahmed Manna, and MP Karim Darwish, Head of the Foreign Relations Committee.
