Fifteen air-conditioned third-class railway vehicles have arrived at the Port of Alexandria from Hungary, Minister of TransportKamel el-Wazir said on Sunday.
He revealed that the new cars bring the total number of railway vehicles that have arrived from Hungary to 785, in the light of a deal signed previously by his ministry, on one hand, and a Russian-Hungarian consortium, on the other.
These vehicles are part of a deal to supply Egypt with 1,300 new railway wagons, the largest in the history of Egyptian railways.
The €1.016 billion-deal was signed by the Egyptian Railways Authority, the operator of the nation’s trains, and Russia’s Transmash, as a representative of the Russian-Hungarian consortium.
The deal covers the production of 800 air-conditioned rolling stock, including 500 third-class air conditioned carriages, in addition to 180 luxury second-class coaches, 90 luxury first-class ones and 30 air-conditioned cafeterias.
“The new railway cars will help provide high-quality services for passengers,”Minister el-Wazir said.
He added that the deal puts into effect directives by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for overhauling the national railways sector according to the highest global standards and specifications to offerbetter services to commuters around the nation.
