Belgian Ambassador to Egypt François Cornet d’Elzius stressed that Egypt organized COP27 in a very effective manner despite the challenge to be a fair host of humanity, and an able promoter for African concerns.
The ambassador’s speech came at an event organized by the Belgian Embassy on the occasion of the birthday of King Philip Leopold of Belgium, at the Museum of Civilization.
“The agreement on loss and damage is groundbreaking, but as far as global warning, we have fallen a bit short and the world remains to be saved. We will continue to fight for more ambition and a better future.”
In his speech , the ambassador referred to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The ambassador went on to say that Ukraine is trying to protect its independence .
” I can assure you that as Belgium, we know precisely what it means. But actually every European country, big or small, has made the same experience during the last 1000 years and we finally came to the wise common conclusion that sovereignty is best protected by sharing it generously. ”
In another context, the ambassador pointed out that Egypt’s financial ratings and international credit remain good despite the numerous challenges.
“Belgium is ever more interested in Egypt, the upcoming peaceful power. We had a rich year of contacts and missions, starting with the visit of HE the President to Brussels in February, but also the numerous political contacts we had during the COP 27, and several economic missions. ”
The ambassador added that this year, they celebrate not only the king, but important anniversaries for Egyptology.
