In cooperation with the Egyptian Tax Authority, Philip Morris Misr has launched a new initiative aimed at encouraging compliance with the retail sales price regulation for tobacco products in the Egyptian markets through implementing a QR code system on the retail sales price of the cigarette packs. Consumers can scan this code, using their smart mobile phones to verify the official retail sales price, as well as access the price list for Philip Morris’s product portfolio in Egypt.
Ali N. Karaman, Managing Director of Philip Morris Egypt & Levant, highlighted that the initiative aims to protect consumers by combating market practices implemented by select retailers, who increase product prices illegally. The transparency achieved through QR code will also supports regulators in their price compliance efforts during the current tough economic times.
Karaman commended the contributions and support of the Egyptian Tax Authority towards the initiative. He also stated that local retailers share the responsibility of protecting this national industry and applauded those of them who have been selling tobacco products according to their official prices. Karaman also confirmed that the prices have not changed since September of 2022.
