Around LE17.3 billion were spent on implementing a number of development and service projects in Assiut since 2014, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities Assem el-Gazzar said in a statement on Tuesday.
The projects were carried out in the existing cities of the governorate, plus Assiout New City and New Nasser City, el-Gazzar said, adding that LE10.2 billion was invested in development projects, including 56 drinking water and sewerage schemes in rural areas and a number of cities in Assiout.
Around 8,233 social housing units have been built since 2014, the minister said.
Other projects include improved services for families most in need, 19 youth centres, 7 social service facilities, and upgrading four slaughterhouses in the governorate.
The minister said total expenditure on New Assiout City since 2014 has reached LE4.4 billion, including LE1.7 billion on the construction of 16,000 units, LE546 million on services, LE762 million on roads and LE1.3 billion on utilities.
El-Gazzar said New Nasser City, west of Assiut, has a share of LE2.8 billion to carry out development and service ventures.
Some LE63 billion has been spent on infrastructure in Upper Egypt since 2014, the minister said.
This figure can be broken down as follows: LE13.2 billion for building 130,892 residential units, LE389 million for 36,869 fully-furnished homes former slum dwellers, LE11.3 billion for 931 roads, LE34.5 billion for 271 water supply and wastewater networks and renovating 1,654 existing systems, and LE3.6 billion for setting up 412 service buildings.
